賽夏族的語言分南北二方言群，據語言學家推測認為是較古老的南島語言，可能出現在台灣的時間較早。因國民黨政府於1949年來台後頒布國語政策，賽夏人大部份被迫講國語（漢語）、甚至以此種語言為日常用語，自我族群的語言反而日漸淡忘，直到近年來政府意識到保存各族群語言文化之重要性，開始推動「族語認證」，才逐漸恢復原本賽夏語的使用人數。
