阿美族家族事務多以女性為主體並由女性負責，家族產業之繼承以家族長女及其他女性為優先；家族/氏族多指母系一族。然而在部落中，有關部落大小事務則是由部落男子所組成的年齡階級制度（selal）和集會所來負責部落事務的統籌規劃與分工執行；各階級負責各種不同的任務與工作，並且聽從青年之父（mama nu kapah）與長輩們的指導。
