十八世紀時，漢人沿高屏溪、曾文溪、八掌溪、濁水溪等水系深入內地進入鄒族的勢力範圍，當時東到中央山脈東側拉庫拉庫溪上游為鄒族控制，因天花瘟疫等疾病傳入，使族人大量死亡勢力衰退（吳鳳事件即在此時發生）。
