Music is weapon, focusing on Ukrainian women composer
For peace, for life, for art, for women!
Since December 1st is the annual National Women Support Women Day, we will broadcast special report "Music is weapon" in the last 20 minutes of "Music" on November 30th.
This episode can be regarded as my "summer homework". In fact, I have been planning it since two years ago. At that time, I accepted the invitation from the 211th issue of "Music Review" and wrote an article "Focus on Ukraine - the artistic country of classical musicians" (please access: https://ebook.culture.tw/publication/2022-04-12/ab6193e5-95b1-4d69-971d-8d36b0346edb/16/ ). I spent a lot of time to write this article, and I planned to invite a visit to Ukraine at that time Contemporary composer, Maestra Hanna Havrylets was also on the list. Unfortunately, on the seventh day after the outbreak of the Russo-Ukrainian war, she suffered an aneurysm and was unable to receive timely medical assistance. She eventually passed away.
While feeling regretful and lamenting, I always hope to do something for this art country. I just happened to see an event of the International Society for Contemporary Music (ISCM), and later learned that Ukrainian musicians are still doing their best to keep their lives functioning normally, and the concerts will be held as usual. Among them " The Ukrainian Women Artists with Their Weapons" and "Two Days & Two Nights of New Music" caught my attention.

I was lucky to have an interview Dr. Tsepkolenko through ZOOM. She also introduced me to other representative Ukrainian female composers. It took nearly six months to complete overseas interviews with eight female composers. Finally, on this year’s National Women for Women Day, we are doing our best to help Ukraine move towards peace.
In fact, Ukraine is a country of art. The eight composers invited are all elites and have received very good education. Each of them is an international composer award winner and teaches in a music conservatory. At this stage, women have more freedom than men because women can choose to study abroad, but men are restricted. Therefore, at the current stage of the music conservatory, the number of men is higher than that of women, and the number of composition professors in the music department is more women than men. This is similar to the gender ratio of music school professor currently.
In addition, these eight composers also believe that Taiwan is to China what Ukraine is to Russia. It seems that in this series of conversations, we found artistic resonance, they also felt a common belief in fighting s
