Many Ming princes were gifted in the arts, such as朱權 Zhu Quan, compiler of Shenqi Mipu, The EmaciatedImmortal's Handbook of Spiritual and Marvelous Mysteries, and Zhu Zaiyu, whom we revisit today. Zhu Zaiyu lived in seclusion for nineteen years, developing groundbreaking theories including the twelve-tone equal temperament, opening new horizons for music. He even renounced his noble title seven times to devote himself fully to musical study. His spirit was steadfast like pine, refined like bamboo, and resilient like plum blossoms in winter.
Today’s program explores works inspired by pine, bamboo, and plum, echoing Zhu Zaiyu’s ideals and the cultural voice of his era. From 鄭思森Zheng Sisen’s Pine to 周文中Zhou Wenzhong’s sizhu enternal Pine, and梅花三弄the classic Three Variations on Plum Blossom, we journey through soundscapes that embody integrity, elegance, and enduring strength in Chinese musical tradition.
