台灣有16個官方認可的土著部落。但是，這些年來，官方認可的部落數量有所變化，從1945年的9個部落到12個部落，再到今天的14個部落。關於部落的數量仍然存在分歧，因為一些土著人認為應該將其視為自己的部落。例如，也有當地認可的部落。土著人的困惑和缺乏代表性仍然存在。
