Frontline Harmonies: Music at the Borders of Empire traces choral conductor and host Mali Liu's own journey from the stage of Spain's Tolosa Choral Contest to the frontlines of the Baltic and the Taiwan Strait. Through nine voices—Basque maestros Esteban Urzelai, Basilio Astulez, and Javier Busto; Baltic masters Jānis Liepiņš, Vytautas Miškinis, and Urmas Sisask; and Matsu's Tsui-Yun Lee, Yu-Feng Weng, and Ke-Wu Lin—the program uncovers a shared history of silenced voices: Franco's decades-long ban on the Basque language, the USSR's suppression of Baltic identity broken only by the Singing Revolution, and Matsu's martial-law era of blackout curfews and air-raid sirens.
